What is Dry Eye?

Dry Eye condition is a common pathology affecting more than 20% of the population.

It is recognised that a large majority of Dry Eye cases are caused by Meibomian Glands Dysfunction (MGD) or Dry Eye Syndrome.

Dry Eye condition is mainly due to a dysfunction of your Meibomian Glands (MGD). These glands, located inside your bottom eye-lids, are responsible for the creation of a tear film that keeps the eyes moisturised.

In an environment increasingly polluted and subject to artificial lights, your eyes are constantly stressed.

Therefore, our Meibomian Glands may start to deteriorate and so fail to create a tear film that is strong enough to protect your eyes from drying up, leading to what is called Dry Eye Syndrome.

What are the symptoms of Dry Eye?

The main symptoms of Dry Eye are irritated, itchy, watery eyes. Dry Eye can cause great discomfort in your day-to-day life, and can make everyday tasks such as working on a computer or staying in an air-conditioned environment difficult.

Common life factors including air pollution, artificial lighting, smartphone and computer use, air-conditioning, driving motor vehicles.
Dry Eye has become so common that many sufferers may dismiss it as a result of eye fatigue due to daily activities and ignore it altogether.

Although Dry Eye generally does not cause serious issues (only discomfort and interruption to normal activities), if left untreated, it can lead to more severe complications such as:
Conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the conjunctiva, where the whites of the eyes look inflamed, and red or pink.

Blepharitis, a common condition where the edges of the eyelids (eyelid margins) become red and swollen (inflamed). Blepharitis can develop at any age, and symptoms can include; itchy, sore and red eyelids that stick together. crusty or greasy eyelashes.

How to treat Dry Eye?

More severe cases can lead to corneal ulcer, an inflammatory infection where there is abrasion or scarring of the epithelial layer of your cornea.

At our dedicated Dry Eye Clinics, we have advanced IPL technology that can treat the cause of your Dry Eyes, not just the symptoms.
